On Thursday afternoon the team had the opportunity to put on a VBS for the kids of Nashville. In a last minute change of plans, we ended up having to go to a park in downtown Nashville instead of a local neighborhood. So instead of knowing we were going to have an audience for VBS, we had to rely on God to provide His perfect opportunity.
We did not know if there would be any kids, or if anyone would want to hear what we had to say. The team had worked very hard on putting together this afternoon.
When we arrived I handed over the reins and let the kids decide what to do. They found an amphitheater with a large grassy field in front; a spot they deemed perfect for VBS.
What happened next can best be summed up by Gerson, one of the youth:
“We had the perfect spot for the VBS. One problem is that no kids were there. They were all at the water park. We thought that if we played music the kids would come. They didn’t. Then we decided that we should go around in a circle around the park that kid would join in. They didn’t.
So then we said let’s just go to where they are. And we did and it went awesome.
Sometimes we think that we have the perfect spot so we shouldn’t go out and go to where they are. But we really do need to go out. Jesus didn’t wait in Nazareth or in Jerusalem his entire ministry. He went to where the people are. And we should follow that example and we did and it was awesome.”
I could not have been more proud of this group as they stepped out of their comfort zone and went to the kids. While things did not go exactly as they planned, everything went the way God planned it.
Sometimes everything seems perfect and God asks you to do something different. Then you have a choice to make. I loved watching the kids make the right choice!
